Megan

Megan grabbed some things from her room, then took a nice long shower. After that, she slipped into her sweats and, hearing Kendall and her grandmother still talking in the living room, Megan decided to try out the sunroom. She’d found a neglected wicker rocker in the backyard yesterday, cleaned it up a little, and placed it in the otherwise empty sunroom. Now she sat down in it to read.

Shortly after Dad’s death, Megan’s mom had presented her with his old leather-bound devotional book; she’d found it in Dad’s desk and decided that Megan should become the new owner. Megan had recognized the worn brown book instantly, and it felt comforting and familiar in her hands now. Her dad had read through the book so many times that the pages were thin and soft from use. But it felt good to read the same words that had once encouraged her dad. Today they encouraged her.

She had resented being awakened by the loud doorbell earlier, but now she was glad for that early-morning wake-up call. It had been a while since she’d been up this early and, although her interview wasn’t until ten, she felt like she would be alert and at her best for it now. She tiptoed past her bedroom, peeking in to see poor Lelani sleeping soundly. Megan had heard Kendall in the living room again last night, trying to get Lelani to chat with her and then going on and on even though Lelani had wanted to sleep. So she made her way to the kitchen, where a partial pot of coffee was still on. Maybe the grandmother had enjoyed a cup of coffee and gone back home. Megan poured a cup for herself and wondered if this early morning-visit was going to be a regular thing. Perhaps she should get a set of earplugs and let someone else answer the doorbell next time.

“Good morning,” said Anna as she entered the kitchen and poured a cup of coffee. “Was someone visiting this morning?”

Megan explained about Kendall’s grandmother.

“That’s pretty weird,” said Anna. “Kendall told me her grandmother was nearly a hundred years old.”

“She looked like it,” said Megan.

“And yet she’s out running around this early in the morning?”

“I don’t think she was doing much running. But it was early and she took a cab over here. She said she couldn’t sleep and she was worried about Kendall.”

Anna laughed. “Sounds like she knows her granddaughter.” Then she downed her coffee, wished Megan good luck on the interview, and headed out to her job.

When nine o’clock neared, and Megan figured that it was past the time when Lelani liked to get up, she went to check on her. Fortunately Lelani was already moving, and it sounded like she was in the bathroom. Megan decided it wasn’t
